50 Mile Run Course Description

  • PLEASE NOTE: Shuttle buses will be provided on race morning from the FINISH (Discovery Ridge at Wintergreen Resort) to the START (Royal Oaks Resort at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and VA Route 814). Transportation will NOT be provided from the finish back to the start.
  • The race begins at Royal Oaks Resort. Royal Oaks Resort is at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and VA Route 814 at milepost 16 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • The course exits Royal Oaks Cabins to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It makes a left onto the BRPW and an immediate right onto RT 814 (gravel mountain road).  It follows 814 for one miles, turns around and returns to the BRPW.  This 2 mile out and back is required by the BRPW ranger to spread the competitors out.  The course makes a left on the BRPW heading south.
  • The course proceeds southbound on the Blue Ridge Parkway for 2.5 miles to the White Rock Gap Parking Area at milepost 18.5.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto the White Rock Trail. There is a gravel parking area. It is also the location of Aid Station #1, White Rock Gap.
  • After 0.2 miles, the course makes a LEFT onto the Slacks trail. It continues uphill on the Slacks trail to the intersection of the Slacks Trail with the Torry Ridge trail.
  • The course makes a RIGHT onto the Torry Ridge trail. It remains on this ridgeline for about 4.5 miles, with beautiful views on the right and left of the valley below.
  • At the end of the Torry Ridge trail, the course makes a LEFT onto the Mills Creek trail, which descends to the mill creek.
  • After about 1.6 miles, the Mill Creek trail crosses the mill creek. This is the intersection of the Mill Creek trail and the Turkey Pen jeep road, and the location of Aid Station #2, Turkey Pen.
  • The course makes a RIGHT onto the Turkey Pen Jeep Road. It continues on the jeep road for 1.6 miles to the intersection with Coal Road. The intersection is not an aid station, but it is a CREW ACCESS LOCATION.
  • At Coal Road, the course turns around and returns to Aid Station #3, Turkey Pen on Turkey Pen Jeep Road.
  • After the aid station, the course continues STRAIGHT on the Mill Creek trail, which runs along mill creek. After about 4 miles, the Mill Creek trail climbs up to Bald Mountain. The Mill Creek trail climbs for 1.3 miles to Bald Mountain.
  • There will be a camping area. This is also the location of Aid Station #4, Bald Mountain.
  • The course makes a RIGHT onto Bald Mountain Jeep Road. It remains on Bald Mountain Jeep Road for 2.5 miles until the intersection with the Kennedy Trail.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto the Kennedy Trail. The Kennedy trail has stunning views of the valley below. It descends for 3.3 miles, where it dead ends on Coal Road, a gravel road. This is the location of Aid Station #5, Kennedy Trail.
  • It makes a LEFT onto Coal Road. it remains on Coal Road (gravel) for 3 miles, to the entrance of the Stony Run Trail. This is the location of Aid Station #6, Stony Run Trail.
  • The course makes a LEFT onto the Stony Run Trail. The Stony Run Trail climbs uphill for about 6 miles back to Bald Mountain Jeep Road and the intersection without the Kennedy Trail.
  • The course continues straight onto Bald Mountain Jeep Road. After 2.5 miles, it returns to Aid Station #7, Bald Mountain.
  • It continues straight on Bald Mountain for 0.2 miles, where it makes a LEFT at the fork.
  • After another 0.2 miles, the course makes a LEFT onto the Torry Ridge trail.  After about 1.4 miles, the course makes a RIGHT downhill onto the Slacks Trail.
  • It remains on the Slacks Trail which descends for about 3 miles to the White Rock Trail.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto the White Rock Trail for 0.2 miles back to White Rock Junction and Aid Station #8, White Rock Gap.
  • It remains on the Blue Ridge Parkway for 4.8 miles to Reids Gap, milepost 13.7. This is the location of Aid Station #9, Reids Gap.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto route 664, which descends for 1 mile to the entrance of Wintergreen Resort.
  • The course turns LEFT onto Wintergreen Drive, which enters Wintergreen Resort.
  • After about 1 mile on Wintergreen Drive, the course makes a LEFT onto the Pond Hollow Trail.
  • It remains on the Pond Hollow Trail for about 0.6 miles, to the intersection of the Laurel Ridge Trail.
  • The course makes a LEFT onto the Laurel Ridge trail, which crosses Wintergreen Drive.
  • The course continues on the Laurel Ridge trail, uphill to the Mountain Inn.
  • At the Mountain Inn, the course makes a RIGHT onto Discovery Ridge Drive to the finish at Discovery Ridge.

  • It remains on the Slacks Trail which descends for about 3 miles to the White Rock Trail.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto the White Rock Trail for 0.2 miles back to White Rock Junction and Aid Station #5, White Rock Gap.
  • It makes a LEFT on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • It remains on the Blue Ridge Parkway for 4.8 miles to Reids Gap, milepost 13.7. This is the location of Aid Station #6, Reids Gap.
  • It makes a RIGHT onto route 664, which descends for 1 mile to the entrance of Wintergreen Resort.
  • It makes a LEFT uphill into Wintergreen Resort. It remains on Wintergreen Drive for 1.4 miles to the Pond Hollow Trail.
  • It makes a LEFT onto the Pond Hollow Trail (right before Fortunes Drive), which climbs to the Laurel Spring Trail.
  • The course follows the Laurel Spring Trail to the finish line at Discovery Ridge by the Mountain Inn at Wintergreen Resort.

25K Run Course Description

  • The 25K course begins at Discovery Ridge at Wintergreen Resort. The course follows Discovery Ridge Road to the Mountain Inn for about 0.3 miles. It then descends on Wintergreen Road away from the Mountain Inn for about 0.6 miles (Wintergreen Road is paved).
  • After about 0.6 miles on Wintergreen Road, the course makes a left onto the Laurel Ridge Loop trail (single track). The Laurel Ridge Loop trail follows the creek and then turns left to climb back toward the Mountain Inn. The Laurel Ridge trail is a beautiful trail famous for its rhododendrons and mountain laurel.
  • The Laurel Ridge Loop trail intersects Wintergreen Road by the Mountain Inn. The course makes a right onto Wintergreen Road and another right onto Discovery Ridge Road to reach Aid Station #1, mile 1.7.
  • The course make a left onto Loggers Alley, which crosses the Wintergreen ski slopes. It follows Loggers Alley along Wintergreen Mountain for about 1.2 miles. Loggers Alley is a double track trail, with beautiful views of the valley below.
  • The course makes a left onto the Chestnut Springs Trail (single track): CAUTION! This is a technical trail, pay attention! At the intersection with the Upper Shamokin Gorge Trail, the course makes a LEFT onto the Upper Shamokin Gorge Trail.
  • CAUTION! This section os the trail is VERY technical and rocky for about 1/4 mile.  You will be climbing, so SLOW DOWN AND WALK WHEN NECESSARY!!  SAFETY FIRST!
  • The course makes a right onto the Old Appalachian Trail (single track).
  • The course makes a  right onto Laurel Springs Drive (paved).  It remains on this paved road for about 1/2 mile
  • The course makes a RIGHT onto the Morgan Loop trail (single track).  This is steep at times, and rocky, so USE CAUTION!  It has beautiful views of the Shamokin Falls.
  • After about 1.1 mile, the Morgan Loop Trail ends onto Loggers Alley. The course makes a right onto Loggers Alley and back to Discovery Ridge to Aid Station #2, mile 6.8
  • The course makes a left onto Discovery Ridge Rd (gravel). It remains on Discovery Ridge Road for about 0.4 miles to the Cedar Cliffs Main Trail.
  • It makes a left onto the Cedar Cliffs Main Trail (single track), a beautiful trail which descends along the Cedar Cliffs with beautiful views of the cedar gorge.
  • The course makes a right onto the Cedar Cliffs South trail, toward the hemlock springs creek. The course crosses the hemlock springs creek and continues on the Cedar Cliffs South trail. CAUTION: After the creek crossing, the trail crosses some power lines. PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR THE SUPPORT WIRES.
  • The course climbs the Cedar Cliffs South trail to the Discovery Ridge road.  THIS IS A VERY TECHNICAL, ROCKY AND STEEP CLIMB.  USE CAUTION!
  • The course makes a right onto the Discovery Ridge Road. This road is a double track jeep road for about 0.4 miles and it turns to gravel for the last 0.3 miles.
  • The course returns to Discovery Ridge and Aid Station #3, mile 10.1
  • The course make a left onto Loggers Alley, which crosses the Wintergreen ski slopes. It follows Loggers Alley along Wintergreen Mountain for about 1.2 miles. Loggers Alley is a double track trail, with beautiful views of the valley below.
